Developing Our Team From The Ground Up

How we’re upskilling our team

There’s been a lot of talk recently about the lack of workers in the transportation sector. The Road Transport Forum has stated that New Zealand is facing a chronic shortage of commercial drivers, with the average age being 54 and the baby boomers heading into retirement.

Committed to playing our role in the industry, Swanson Transport and Lupton Carriers are making sure we’re developing our own team members in every area that we can.

This development includes our entry level team members having the opportunity to grow their skills across both businesses.

Developing valuable skills for the long term

Across both Swanson Transport and Lupton Carriers, we employ and train entry-level staff including school leavers in a range of areas, such as:

  • Warehouse operation: scan picking using electronic handheld scan guns, then upon gaining their forkhoist licence team members are trained in replenishing pick faces, transferring inwards goods into storage locations and outwards goods finalisation.

  • Small truck and van deliveries: team members with class 1 drivers licences driving our small truck and vans which opens up opportunities for them to progress their driving skills to class 2 trucks, then larger trucks and hiabs once they gain their appropriate licences and experience.

When we bring new team members on, we explore what interests them and what skills they want to develop, so that we can find the best opportunities for them to grow, not just in their current role but in the business.
